Based on a 2018 architectural assessment and recommendation, Renaissance was chosen to complete the copper dome and copper standing seam and copper flat-lock roof replacement.

Work Included

THE WORK BEGAN IN JUNE 2020 wITH THE RESTORATION OF THE COPPER DOME FOLLOWED BY REPLACEMENT OF THE COPPER STANDING SEAM AND COPPER FLAT-LOCK ROOFS. THE FINAL ELEMENT WAS THE INSTALLATION OF THE FOUR COPPER EAGLES THAT ADORN THE DOME in NOVEMBER 2022.

  • masonry work – cutting, pointing, and rebuilding, capstone resetting and flashing.
  • abatement work – removal of modified bitumen low slope roofing material on main roof of courthouse.
  • repairs and containment of concerete deck including additional steel shoring and support materials.
  • installation of structural steel substrate rigid foam insulation, plywood decking materials over existing repaired concrete slab decking.
  • installation of copper standing seam panel roofing and integrated gutter and flashing details.
ALL COPPER FABRICATION WAS COMPLETED IN RENAISSANCE'S IN-HOUSE COPPER STUDIO.

THE CHALLENGE

The project required abatement and removal of the existing membrane materials.

The condition of the existing masonry decking which was 'crumbling' in multiple locations required work that was unknown at the time the project began.

Weather was also a challenge during the project which began in the summer of 2020 and was completed in the late fall of 2022.

THE RENAISSANCE SOLUTION

Steel shoring and support along with an engineered metal netting was added in the attic to support and protect against further damage from the concrete block substrate.

Additionally, a metal purlin was installed to beneath the concrete substrate. These additions enabled Renaissance to complete the installation of the new standing seam roof.

THE RESULTS

This extrordinary project presented a high degree of difficulty and required a highly skilled and dedicated work force proficient in historic restoration, copper roofing, and copper fabrication. The team at Renaissance Roofing, Inc. rose to the challenge and successfully and safely completed this high-profile roof restoration, skillfully preserving one of America’s historic landmarks.

Renaissance has received the 2023 International Federation of Roofing Trade 'Metal Roof' Award, and the Metal Construction News award for Metal Craftsmanship.
