Funderburg House Museum

Belvidere, IL

After standing empty for 35 years, this 1906 family mansion was purchased by the Boone County Museum of History which began a complete restoration of the residence from the inside out, including the work completed by Renaissance - soft metal and flat roofing, gutters and downspouts in historically accurate materials.

Work included

  • Replacement of all soft metal elements including
    • Copper Gutters
    • Copper Downspouts
    • Copper Wall and valley flashings

THE CHALLENGE

Finding a workable solution for the soft metal replacement that fit the desires of the client and the limitations of the insurer was a challenge.

Also, the steep pitch of the roof (15/12) combined with the multiple roof lines/angles made it difficult to get a good tie in to the upper flat roofs.

THE RENAISSANCE SOLUTION

Working closely with Anna Pivoras, the Director for the Boone County Museum of History, the Renaissance team was able to assist them in completing the work that needed to be done within their limited budget.

In a series of projects, Renaissance installed a new low-sloped roof, and replaced the original gutters, downspouts, chimney flashings, wall flashings, and valley flashings with new copper to enhance the restoration, bringing the former family home back to its original grandure.

THE RESULTS

Anna Pivoras (Director of the Boone County Museum of History) stated, 'Those of us who own a historic structure, and appreciate the integrity and craftsmanship of a bygone era understand that one cannot cut corners when it comes to restoration. While working with Renaissance, we were confident that the experienced and knowledgable workers would do the best possible job and we were willing to pay more to ensure that our roof would be done correctly and have the best chance to stand the test of time for another hundred plus years! We believe that our Funderburg House’s roof is even better now than it was when it was constructed in 1906!'
